Sweden is a huge mecca for talented pop artists, and the latest act to emerge from the country is Tove Styrke (not to be confused with fellow Swede Tove Lo). The 22-year-old singer is ready to take on the U.S. market with her new single, “Ego” — the first single from her debut studio LP, Kiddo.

Speaking to Pigeons & Planes, Styrke told that the upcoming album is named after Kill Bill's protagonist, Beatrix Kiddo:

"I like the word 'kiddo'. It’s playful, it’s the name of my favorite movie character (Beatrix Kiddo) and I’ve been called it for ever and ever for better and for worse. If I were to describe the album in one sentence I’d say that it’s playful, much inspired by movies (especially Kill Bill) and that the songs are very personal to me. Sound wise there are electronic textures mixed and matched with a bunch of different things on this album. Like marching band drum rolls (that song is called “Snaren” which is Swenglish for “the snare drum”), pedal steel guitar, rhymes about Britney Spears, quite poorly played tambourine and bass galore."

Shift over, another pop Swede provocateur coming through! (in June).

Tove Anna Linnéa Östman Styrke began life (not literally, no) as an 18-year-old contestant on Swedish Idol in 2009. As someone who's been obsessed with making music and noise since she was a toddler (her father was in a successful band in the '70s), she is now, in the grand Swedish tradition, a wildly talented producer and songwriter with perfect pop pitch and a head full of intelligente and provocative concepts. So, Even If I'm Loud, It Doesn't Mean I'm Talking To You is a "fuck you" to sexist rock crowds, Brag imagines the inconsequential world of the comment-box blowhard, while recent single Borderline is a brilliantly liquid-hipped, dancehall-insufed takedown of the patriarchy. If you think you've heard that before, then let me reassure you this one's really, really good. ****

- Rob Fitzpatrick, Q Magazine Review

Along with this magazine clipping, Tove Styrke announced via her facebook and instagram accounts that her sophomore album, Kiddo, was postponed to June.
