To start things off, don’t get all, “Oh my god, that name’s racist/sexist!” Black Pussy was named because that was almost the title of The Rolling Stones song “Brown Sugar” before their label made them change it. And despite the millions of blissfully ignorant middle-aged moms singing along with that song at the top of their lungs for the past forty years, “Brown Sugar” is a very graphic anti-slavery song. Don’t believe me? Look up the lyrics. And it was supposedly written for the beloved mother of Mick Jagger’s first child, who was black. Rock n’ roll was never supposed to be something you could talk about in front of your mother, and these guys don’t give a fuck.

Anyway, Black Pussy is a band from Portland who have somehow managed to transcend both doom metal and ‘70s-style pop music and create what front man Dustin Hill calls “stoner-pop.” Their songs are catchy as hell, but so heavy you can feel your lungs booming, and come packed with a punch of an Everest-sized pile of Sunn amps behind them. I saw them play on NYE and some smug idiot snickered to his friend behind me and said, “I wonder how many of those amps are fake!” I turned around, stared deep into his soul for as long as I could, and uttered a very stern, “Absolutely none.” I cannot tell you how many times I have seen them play alongside the dirtiest of sludge bands, only to set up, swagger onstage in their (very scarce) ‘70s clothes and blow everyone out of the water.

The band spent last fall on tour with ex-Kyuss dudes Vista Chino, but before that they were holed up in Palm Desert, California, recording their new album Less Info More Mojo, in Brant Bjork’s studio. I have no idea when it’s going to be out, but I know it’s going to be sometime soon in 2014 and Jesus Christ I hope it’s soon because I’m going to lose my mind. While their 2012 debut On Blonde is a great record, and it’s the only full-length they have out right now, it’s hardly a reflection of the band’s full sound and capabilities — they hardly ever perform those songs live anymore. Less Info More Mojo is going to be so heavy, and the songs are going to be stuck in your head for so long, and the ladies around you while you’re listening to it are going to just randomly start taking their clothes off.
