Rufus Wainwright's upcoming studio album, "Unfollow the Rules", is scheduled to be released on April 24th, 2020. It marks Wainwright's ninth of original material, his first since "Out of the Game" (2012) - in the meantime, he focused on "Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets" (2016), an album with adaptations of Shakespeare's sonnets, and his second opera, "Hardian" (2018) -, and his first under BMG.

The album was produced by Mitchell Froom, and other contributors include Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, and Blake Mills.

Back in 2018, when the first writing and recording sessions were going, Rufus told The Guardian about the songs: "They are songs that bubbled up during my years doing operas, and getting frustrated with directors and conductors and opera houses. So I've been going into a room and singing them all to fuck off."

The album's title is a a phrase used by his daughter, and it has been described as "a return to form and his most accessible album to date" and "the bookend" to his 1998 self-titled debut.

Rufus Wainwright has announced that he’s had to postpone the release of his upcoming 10th studio album ‘Unfollow The Rules’ due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sharing the news on Instagram, the singer-songwriter explained to fans that “physical product is extremely important” to him and revealed that the CD and vinyl versions of the album are currently “stuck in the warehouse as they had to shut down.” The album was originally scheduled for an April 24 release.

Instead of the album, though, he and his team are going to release a new single from the album on the 24th of April "and there are some other really exciting new ideas that we are working on diligently".
